DFP Interview with Mike Matusow
by Team DFP on 9-6-2007
DFP: Where and when did you learn the game? Did you have any mentors?
MM: Phil Samuroff got me into poker. I learned in Las Vegas mainly at a casino called Sam’s Town.
DFP: How did you build your bankroll? What game and stakes did you play at first? How many times, if ever, have you gone broke?
MM: I had backers, playing 5/10 at first. I’ve gone broke too many times to count. Over at least 50 times.

DFP: What stakes and type of poker do you currently play?
MM: Omaha, Split Hi/Low, just about every game. 20/40 lowest and 400/800 highest in NL. I play 2k/4k Omaha limit at times.
DFP: What is the largest ring game pot you have ever won? Ever lost?
MM: I don’t recall really. Probably over 100k each way.

DFP: Was there ever a moment when you really felt you broke through as a player? Where you thought you could go from a person who played poker to a person who played poker for a living?
MM: Yes, back when I won my first tournament in 1992.
DFP: What was the first big tournament you played in? When was your first cash? First BIG cash?
MM: I won 10k at the Sam's Town tourney, then won 25k at the 4 Queens in 1992-1993.
DFP: % Ring game vs. % Tournament play?
MM: I prefer cash ring games. No idea to give you the exact numbers.
DFP: Do you prefer online or live poker?
MM: I love live, but online I'm addicted way too much!!
DFP: What are your thoughts on the new bill Congress has passed? How do you feel it will affect the poker world; both online and live?
MM: It’s a stupid bill. It's effects have not been that hard on me, but on others yes.

DFP: What are your aspirations in poker? What are your aspirations away from the table?
MM: I’d like to one day win player of the year. That would be nice. Qway from table, just to be a better person is all.
DFP: You have gone through some rough times in the past. How are you handling your addictions, like sports betting, now?
MM: I bet a lot less on sports. I’ve slowed down some of my bad habits a lot.
DFP: Have you gotten the “Matusow blowups” under control or do they still plague you from time to time?
MM: They plague every player from time to time. My blowups are no different than anyone else’s. I just coined a phrase and it stuck.
DFP: Do you ever think another well known pro will win the WSOP main event?
MM: NO
DFP: This year’s champ, Jamie Gold, has gotten a lot of negative press since he won the bracelet. Have you gotten a chance to meet Jamie, and what are your thoughts on how he has been portrayed in the media?
MM: Accurately.
DFP: How did your friends/family react to you playing poker full time?
MM: My family is not wild about it because of the swings, all my buds are all players basically so…

DFP: Who are some players you really look up to?
MM: Doyle, Dan Harrington, TJ, and Ivey.
DFP: Who are your best friends in the poker world?
MM: I have a lot of them. Danny I’ve known a long time and Hellmuth.
DFP: What was the best advice you ever got and who gave it to you?
MM: Heh, I really can't recall that one. In poker the guy I first mentioned. In life, my parents, but its a lot of things, not just one thing.
DFP: Where are you currently living, and if it’s not Vegas, how much time do you spend in L.V.?
MM: Vegas
DFP: What is your favorite Vegas casino? Favorite outside of Vegas?
MM: Bellagio, Caesars’. Outside? Don’t have one.
DFP: Do you keep lucky items at the table with you?
MM: Sometimes, depends if I feel I need them.
DFP: What do you do away from poker to help you relax? Hobbies?
MM: Take a lot of Jacuzzis.
DFP: Where do you see poker going in the next 10 years?
MM: It will taper off and slow down. I see the main event back under 2000 people within 5 years.
DFP: Finish this sentence: If it wasn’t for poker, right now I would be ____.
MM: ...a car mechanic. |
